GenAI Assistants Score High on Speed and Ease. Accuracy and Privacy Are a Different Story.

The market-wide perception of generative AI assistants has a recognizable shape: strong on the surface qualities that drive adoption, weak on the foundational ones that sustain trust. Mod7's Beyond AI Adoption study asked current users in the U.S. to identify up to two things their preferred genAI assistant does best and up to two things it does worst. The result is a clear perception picture for a technology category at an early stage of consumer development.
The strengths command broad consensus. Across the full current user base, speed and ease of use each finished with a +16.9 net score, the share of respondents naming each as a top strength minus the share naming it as a top weakness. Creativity and ideation, i.e., brainstorming, followed at +12.3 points, with agentic task capability closing out the positives at +5.6. These are, effectively, the attributes that built the category. GenAI assistants are fast, approachable, and generative, and users across all tools and frequency tiers recognize that.
The weaknesses are just as consistent. Privacy and security, especially pertaining to sensitive personal information, posted the steepest deficit at -14.6 points: only 8.5% of users named it as a strength, while 23.2% flagged it as a weakness. Accuracy and reliability followed at -7.1 points, with 16.6% citing it as a top attribute and 23.7% putting it in the "does worst" column. Objectivity, how neutral and unbiased users perceive their preferred assistant to be, also finished negative at -6.9 points.
ChatGPT and Gemini lead, but not in the same way
The two largest tools by user volume tell a familiar story at the top and diverge at a meaningful fault line. ChatGPT scores four positive net scores: speed (+22.2 points), ease of use (+19.6), creativity (+15.6), and agentic task capability (+12.4), mapping directly to the generalist positioning documented in the Beyond AI Adoption report. Its deepest deficits are privacy (-20.5 points), accuracy (-14.2), and objectivity (-10.7). More than one in four ChatGPT preferrers, the users who consider it their go-to choice when forced to pick one assistant, named accuracy and reliability as something the tool does poorly.
Gemini leads ChatGPT on speed at +25.0 points and matches it closely on ease of use (+18.0). But unlike the incumbent in the market, Gemini registers a +3.4 net score in accuracy and reliability, a meaningful gap. Its privacy deficit is nearly as steep at -20.1 points, suggesting that accuracy and privacy are not the same problem even when they feel related.
Other Assistants Show More Distinct Tradeoffs
The remaining tools had smaller preferred-user bases and their findings should be read directionally, but their profiles still show meaningful differences.
Privacy is where one tool breaks from the rest of the market entirely. Apple Intelligence is the only assistant in this study where privacy and security finishes as a clear net strength, at +14.9 points: 29.4% of its preferrers named it a top attribute, compared to 14.6% who named it a weakness. That finding aligns with the hardware-level privacy positioning Apple has built across its ecosystem and referenced in the Beyond AI Adoption competitive scorecard. Speed, by contrast, is a relative weakness for Apple Intelligence at -2.1 points, with tone and personalization (i.e., how the assistant communicates with the user) its deepest deficit at -18.5 points. The tradeoffs of Apple’s partnership-centric, feature-embedded approach show up clearly in the data.
Among the other tools measured, Copilot finishes positive on ease of use (+15.5 points), task capability (+8.9), and integration (+6.8), reflecting its deeply embedded position in the Microsoft 365 ecosystem. Privacy is its steepest negative at -16.1 points.
Claude's perception profile is notable on two counts: ease of use scores +16.7 points, in line with the market leaders, while speed registers as a meaningful weakness at -12.7 points. Accuracy and reliability is neither a clear strength nor a weakness for Claude preferrers, scoring essentially flat at -0.3 points, a different profile than ChatGPT's double-digit accuracy deficit.
Grok posts the highest speed net score in the study at +35.7 points, but users trade that off sharply: ease of use is -26.9 points and integration -29.4 points, the steepest weaknesses of any tool on those attributes. Meta AI earns its highest nets on ease of use (+31.0 points) and creativity (+23.6), a profile consistent with its embedding across social platforms, while tone and personalization is its deepest negative at -27.1 points.
These findings connect directly to a structural theme in the Beyond AI Adoption report: the trust deficit that keeps non-users on the sidelines. Privacy concerns (34%) top the list of reasons non-users cite for avoiding genAI assistants entirely, while accuracy worries (24%) remain among the leading barriers. The perception from current users confirms those gaps are real, not misconceptions born of unfamiliarity, but weaknesses that experienced users have encountered and named. The perception problem facing AI platforms does not stop at the edge of the user base. It lives inside it.
